I have come to realize that I have a very difficult time with finding the right rugs, dining room tables, and couches. I finally found a couch that I absolutely LOVE. Now I'm working on our farmhouse dining room table makeover. The one we have now is great. But it's just too long for the space we have, and it's not my favorite next to our dark cabinets. It's a little too much wood tone for me. When I found this old library table on craigslist I was pretty hopeful this was THE table. I never know until I live with it for a few days so don't be too surprised if it's different next time you see a post, haha!
Today I'm going to walk you through the whole makeover process using some of my favorite FolkArt® products! FolkArt® Home Decor Chalk Paint is made in the USA and is both water-based and non toxic! It comes in 41 different colors and is now available in 8 oz, but also now in 2, 16 and 32 oz sizes.
This one did take some time, and I really love how it turned out... now just to see if I love it in this space!

Distressed Farmhouse Dining Room Table Makeover Tutorial
We all love a good before and after. Here's what the table looked like when I bought it for $40!
With the FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Paint you don't normally need to sand, but the table was in pretty rough shape and had some splintering and I had to do some repair to it. I decided to go ahead and sand the whole thing down to give it a nice fresh start.
Now the fun part begins. I started off by using the fast drying FolkArt Wood Tint in Walnut across the entire top of the table following the manufacturers instructions. You can also use the FolkArt Wood Tints over light colors of FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Paint to crackle and create antique effects. You can use it both indoors and outdoors; for outdoor projects seal with protective coating such as FolkArt Home Decor Varnish. And this is non toxic and water based leaving you with easy soap and water cleanup!
Next I applied a coat of the FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Paint in Maui Sand to the table top. After that dried I used a belt sander to distress it. That might seem a little extreme for distressing but my goal was go remove quite a bit of the paint. (The things we do to our furniture, haha)! Make sure when using a belt sander you go WITH the grain! This paint layers and distresses beautifully!
The paint left had some harsh lines so I softened it up a little with a sheet sander followed by an random orbital sander.
When all the sanding was done, I wiped the surface clean and the used FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Paint in Castle to create a "Gray Wash". In order to do this I poured a little bit of the paint into a disposable cup, and put an equal amount of water and stirred until completely mixed. Then I dipped a lint free cloth into the paint and wiped down the table top as if I was cleaning it off with a rag after dinner. Pardon all my technical jargon, haha! You can see the difference in the photo below.
Next I used the FolkArt® Home Decor Antique Wax to seal the paint. It adds rich texture and depth, seals and protects the paint. The wax is also water-based, non toxic, and available in 8 oz, but now in 2, 16 and 32 oz sizes. I followed the manufacturers instructions for applying this and worked in very small sections. First you apply it with the appropriate brush.
Then immediately use a lint free rag to rub it into the surface and remove any excess wax.
Let that dry and you can begin working on the base of the table. This is the easy part!! I literally just applied two coats of the FolkArt®Home Decor Chalk Paint in Adirondack White.
I allowed everything to fully dry and moved this new guy into my dining room!
