How to Make a DIY Chalkboard Sign

Paint the Sign

Start with a clean, unfinished wood sign. Apply the chalkboard spray paint using light, even passes, following the manufacturer's instructions on the can.

Avoid spraying too heavily in one area, as this can cause drips or uneven spots. If needed, apply additional light coats until the wood is completely covered and you can no longer see the grain underneath.

Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Season the Chalkboard Surface

Before writing on a newly painted chalkboard, it's important to season the surface. Simply rub the side of a piece of chalk over the entire chalkboard until it's completely covered.

Once the surface is covered, wipe it clean with a dry cloth or chalkboard eraser. This simple step helps prevent permanent "ghost" images the first time you erase your writing.

Now your sign is ready to use year after year.

Photo Tips

Getting kids to cooperate for pictures isn't always easy, and mine certainly likes to keep things interesting!

When I photographed my son, he growled, jumped, spun in circles, squeezed his eyes shut, and barely wanted to hold the sign. The photos we ended up with felt like a small miracle, but now they're some of my favorites because they perfectly captured his personality.
