Do you ever make something and love it so much that you want to use it over and over again? I made these stockings last year (and never posted about them). I ran out of time and the last thing anyone wants to see in January is another Christmas Tutorial right? This year I made it in time : ) I changed them up a little from before, but they are just so perfect on my almost black piano. I actually tried putting up my old burlap stockings, and a few vintage ones I have from when my husband and I were kids, but these just work! So today let's see how to make these Drop Cloth Stockings.
Not only do these look great, but they are so budget friendly. All you need is a small drop cloth from the hardware store. Unless you need to make an obscene amount, then you might need a big drop cloth, but either way, $20 max for your Drop Cloth Stockings!
Supplies:
- Drop Cloth
- Sewing Machine or Serger (affiliate links to the ones I use)
- Scissors
- An old stocking for tracing
- Cotton Piping
- Twine
- Hot Glue Gun
How to make Drop Cloth Stockings
If you want to wash your drop cloth first, go for it. It will soften it up a bit for you, but it's not required. Then using an old stocking that has a shape you like, lay it out on the drop cloth and trace around it leaving you some extra space for the seam. I left on about an extra half inch or so. I added about 6 extra inches to the height of the stocking as well. That way I could tuck it in, or adjust the height of them. Then flip your stocking over and trace again for the other side. Keep in mind you will be sewing these right sides together so the toe has to be pointed the right way. Repeat until you have enough, then just cut out your pieces. Once you have your pieces cut out, sew or use your serger to finish off the edges.
Once you have it sewed, turn it right side out, and tuck the cuff back into the stocking to give you a nice edge. Then using your hot glue gun, glue a twine loop onto the stocking wherever you plan on hanging it from. I don't like gluing it right in the crease because it tends to make the stocking want to twist around. I put it on the flat edge of the stocking.
Then I used really thick cotton piping (like you would use for pillow trim) and tied it in a bow around the stockings. I tied it just like you tie a shoe.

I absolutely love this idea! Just one question- did you have to use some kind of heavy duty thread to sew through the thick material? I am having issues getting mine to stay together.

Hi Noelle, I'm so sorry I'm just now seeing this. The holidays were crazy for us, and I'm still playing catch up. I used a serger, so that might be why I didn't need the heavy duty thread, but you can buy heavy duty thread at the craft stores that should help with that problem! Hope that helps!
