Eeeeek! I'm so excited about this post!!
If you are here visiting from Nat and Holly's blog, WELCOME! So excited to have you stop over!
I'm jumping in the wrapping series to bring you this super fun series headed up by the not only beautiful, but super awesome sisters over at My Sister's Suitcase!
The inspiration behind this series is the song
"12 Days of Christmas"
I Love this song! Who are we kidding?? I love Christmas!!
So here are my
Two Turtle Doves
I have to say... I thought a long time on this. I was so inspired by this series!
Nat and Holly did a great job thinking it up!
I originally wanted to do a stuffed bird, 3 dimensional type thing, but let's face it...
sometimes you know when your sewing skills are met!
Plus, if by some miracle I was able t make one, I'd probably never be able to describe how in the world I did it, hah!
So I scoured the internet for inspiration...
I googled turtle doves and ran across these images and loved how their wings looked all ruffly! : )
I still wanted to do the whole 3 dimensional thing, and so my ruffled fabric feathers were born, plus I had to stick with my whole Whimsical Theme!!! Aren't they fun?! I kinda LOVE them!!
I decided not to hang them from a ribbon because I wanted them to look like they were resting sweetly on the branches chirping away! The kids think they are toys but, hey... they are bright and fun looking... if I were a kid I'd want to play with them too! ; )
So let's make some shall we?
{Supplies}
Felt (white)
Craft Weight Fusible Interfacing
Some fun Christmas Fabric
Scissors
Hot Glue Gun
Elastic Thread and Sewing Machine (optional)
{Tutorial}
First thing I did was iron the fusible interfacing to my white felt. Then I hand drew these birdies onto the interfacing/traced them on and cut out using scissors. The interfacing is just to keep them stiff so they don't roll and get all bent out of shape - hehe!
I know, I have mad art skills, lol! Once those are cut out you can just set them aside and let's work on the fun wings! To make them I just took some short pieces of fabric from a jelly roll I had in Kate Spain's Joy and ruffled them. I just used elastic thread in my bobbin to ruffle them, but they are so small you could easily just hand stitch a basting stitch and ruffle them. I ruffled 4 pieces for each bird.
Next I just took my ruffled pieces and placed them on the bird until I had them arranged how I liked and hot glued each ruffle starting from the bottom and worked my way up.
Now you just need to cut out a tiny circle and triangle for the eye and beak and glue those on.
Now you have a sweet little turtle dove with fun fabric ruffled feathers!!
Don't forget to check out the others in the series: ) You want want to miss them all, and remember, this is only day 2 so there is plenty more awesomeness headed your way!
