After I revealed my Summer Living Room, I got a lot of questions about my huge clock! So let's hop straight into this fabulous wooden clock tutorial!
For this tutorial I pretty much went straight of my Weathered Wood Tutorial I used on my Rustic Wood Shim Vase, but this is on much larger pieces of wood, so I'll take you through a little photo tutorial so you can see how it looks! Before we get started I have to tell you, my clock is actually a faux clock, but I will be sharing with you how to turn it into a real working clock!
Supplies:
- 5 1x6's @ 42" (I got a low quality wood because I wanted the knots and imperfections - plus super cheap!)
- 2 1x4's @ approx 25"
- 1" Wood Screws
- Supplies for getting the Weathered Wood Look found HERE
- Minwax Dark Walnut Stain
- DIY Wood Stain - found HERE
- Ryobi Orbital Sander
- Ryobi Miter Saw
- Ryobi Impact Driver
- French Cleat Hanger (for hanging on the wall)
- Clock Parts (affiliate link -USA Made High Torque Clock Movement & 14" Hands Kit
)
Rustic Wooden Clock Tutorial
First you are going to cut all your 1x6's to approx 42". I wasn't super careful about this because I didn't want them to line up perfectly. Then apply a coat of the Minwax Dark Walnut Stain.
Once this is dry we will give it that weathered look by dry brushing white paint over the stain.
It should look a little something like this when you are done.
Then I used my Ryobi Sander to rough up the paint and distress the wood.
Once you have it distressed to your liking, apply a coat of the DIY Wood Stain. This helps the paint look aged and give it a natural look!
Let everything dry completely before putting it together.
Now to assemble the clock you are going to line up your 1x6's face down. If you want them staggered, arrange them how you like. Then place a 1x4 across the boards about 6 inches from the top, and another one about 6 inches from the bottom. If you want to clamp your wood together you can, but it's not absolutely necessary for this project. Then, using your wood screws start at one side and drill your screw through the 1x4 into your 1x6. When attaching the next one, be sure and push it up flush against the already attached 1x6. Repeat until you have at least one screw in each 1x6's at both the top and bottom. Here is what the back will look like for all you visual people like me! : )
Now it is time to install the clock mechanism. To do this follow the instructions on the manufacturer's label. The reason my clock is a faux clock is because the 1x6's are a little too thick for the clock mechanism. This is an easy fix, I just haven't done it yet. You will need to notch out a place for the clock motor to be recessed into your 1x6. Or, if you don't need it to be a working clock, you can be like me and just attach it on there for aesthetic purposes : )
Now you just need to add your french cleat (pictured above) and hang on the wall!
