It is no secret that all boys (and men) love Legos! So when the question "What would you like for your birthday theme this year?" arises, Legos is generally shouted from the roof tops. For the last two years I have made these adorable Lego Head Cake Pops for Liam's (my youngest son) birthday, and I am sure this year was not my last! You may be wondering to yourself, how hard are those to make?! No worries, I have zero experience as a cake decorator and don't even desire to be one. However, if I can do it, so can you. All you have to do is believe in yourself and use your Lego imagination!
This year I did something different! As I was preparing all the supplies needed to make these fun Lego Cake Pops I thought it would be fun and unique to have you instantly see the process and join in on the fun. Therefore, I hosted a spur of the moment, step by step #livetutorial on Instagram. How to Make Lego Cake Pops was our very first #livetutorial on our Instagram page and there will definitely be more live tutorials in the future! Therefore, stay tuned and don't forget to follow us so you won't miss out on all the fun! Below are the photos I shared during the live tutorial. All these photos were taken with an iPod camera and were not edited or filtered, so you are getting to see the real deal!
How to Make Lego Cake Pops
Ingredients
- I used this Quick Yellow Cake Mix that I obtained directly out of the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer Instructions and Recipes
- 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ⅓ cups sugar
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup shortening I used Spectrum Organic Shortening
- 1 cup low-fat milk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
For the Homemade Whipped Cream
- 2 cups of heavy whipping cream
- 1 tsp of vanilla
- 2 TBSP of powdered sugar
For the Outer Coating
- Wilton Yellow Candy Melts 12-Ounce
- 2-3 TBSP of refined coconut oil
For the Decorations
Instructions
For the Quick Yellow Cake
- Preheat oven to 350 F degrees.
- Place all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
- Then add shortening, milk, and vanilla.
- Mix on low speed, while scraping the sides as needed.
- Next add eggs and mix well, (1-2 minutes).
- Place cake batter into a greased and floured 9 x 13 pan.
- Cook for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick placed into the center of the cake comes out clean.
For the Homemade Whipped Cream
- Icing is commonly used for the binding process of the mixture, but I use homemade whipped cream and it does not disappoint!
- Chill your mixing bowl and beaters (or whisk attachment) in the freezer for about 10 minutes.
- Add whipping cream to the chilled bowl and mix until stiff peaks are just about to form.
- Then beat in vanilla and sugar until peaks form.
How to Make the Lego Cake Pops
- Once your cake is finished baking and completely cooled, crumble it into a large mixing bowl.
- Then add about 3 cups of fresh whipped cream to the cake crumble and mix with a wooden spoon until you have a dough-like consistency.
- Next, form Lego heads from the mixture and place each one on a parchment lined baking sheet. My mixture yielded about 22 Lego heads, but your yield may vary depending on the size of pops you are making. Each one will have its own uniqueness.
- Pour one package of Wilton's yellow candy melts into a double broiler (or a homemade one). Now here comes the secret - add 2 to 3 TBSP of refined coconut oil to the melts. The oil helps to create a wonderful, smooth texture that allows the melts to evenly coat the cake pops. Apply medium to low heat to the broiler while stirring constantly until the candy melts.
- One at a time, dip the tip of a cake pop stick into the melted candy melts and then insert the dipped end of the stick into a Lego head. Do not dip the Lego head into the candy melts just yet! Place the heads in the fridge for about 15 minutes in order to secure the sticks to the heads.
- Now you are ready to dip those cake pops!
- Dip and twirl to coat.
- Then place a yellow M&M on top of each Lego head.
- Place the cake pop in a cake pop holder and repeat this process for the rest! I used a block Styrofoam that I wrapped in birthday wrapping paper as my cake pop holder 🙂
- Once your cake pops are hardened, they are ready for faces! Toothpicks and black & red decorating gel work great!
- When presenting these fun Lego Cake Pops you will receive giddy smiles and the Most Awesome Mom Award!

Thanks for the tutorial! These look great—really fun. I’m wondering if you have any tips on making them ahead of time. Did you serve them right away? Or refrigerate? I’d like to make them the night before the party.
