I am here today to share with you my Farmhouse Cottage Kitchen Reveal. I have been working all summer on this space in my house, and I am so happy to call it finished! When we moved into this house I knew that this kitchen would be the very first major project I wanted to tackle. I can't even believe the difference! These are all the same cabinets. I transformed the flat panel doors into shaker style doors, which is what took me the longest. It's really not difficult, but it was definitely time consuming. So are you ready to see the transformation?? You can find a list of all my sources at the bottom of the post.

It's so hard to say what my favorite part of this kitchen is, but those butcher block counters are up there! They were the first thing I knew I wanted when I was brainstorming my design.
White cabinets were always a must for me, especially in this kitchen. It is a pretty small space, and the soffit above the cabinets just makes it feel much more closed off. I wanted to rip that out so badly, but it just wasn't in the budget, so I tried to embrace it! And now I don't really mind it so much, mabye it's my super awesome grocery sign ; ) The Kitchen light is from Amazon (affiliate link)
I almost ended up not going with the subway tile because my husband wasn't crazy about it. I am SO glad I fought him on that cause not only does he love it, but I'm fairly certain sometimes I just catch myself gazing at it!
My biggest obstacle was that awkward cabinet next to my stove that throws off the symmetry. I wanted to rip that out too, but it would have ended up with me just wanting all new cabinets, again... out of the budget, so again I embraced it. The main problem is that it is literally right next to the stove so there is a splatter issue. Nobody wants white paint where your sauces splash on to, so I had to cover it with something. I was walking through the hardware store one day and saw these tiles. They are actually meant to be a back splash, but they just so happened to fit on my cabinet.
This sink was also one of my favorite parts of the room! I wanted a white sink cause well.... I like everything white. When I brought this home my kids said "mom.... did you paint the kitchen sink white". Not only does my husband make fun of me for my love of all things white, but now my kids have joined him. Love you too guys! ; )
They love white too, they are just scared to admit it! .
I have always wanted open shelving in my kitchen, but let's be real here... I don't have strictly pretty dishes. Nor is my kitchen ever clean enough to have everything on the shelves at once. So I decided I would add these pretty little guys above my island counter. I will have a tutorial for those soon! : )
I left the doors off the cabinet above my fridge for a few reasons. One, I never store anything up there cause I can't reach it. Two, It let's me add some season decor. Three... the hinges wouldn't fit. Maybe that should have been one, lol. But I love my little space!
And of course every kitchen needs a chalkboard right? Now if I could just master the art of writing on a chalkboard!
So there it is! My Farmhouse Cottage Kitchen! I am in love with it. It is officially my favorite room in the house! And just to remind you....

Thanks Lisa!! : )
Brooke Rannebarger
When you started your kitchen remodel, what did you do first? Is it smart to do the cabinets first and then the new sink, countertops and backsplash?
sandi
Beautiful! Beautiful! You did a fabulous job and it ONLY took one summer. Pat yourself on the back. The first time we redid our old kitchen it took three years. Now it's time to do it again. I love your blog and you and your sister make it one of my favorites. PS...I have used the very same tile that you used on the side of your cabinet and just love it. Great job!
Katie
Aww Thanks so much Sandi, we are honored to have you read our blog!!! Kitchens are hard work! If I wasn't trying to write a blog post on it, I likely would have never actually finished it, lol! I am terrible at all those last little details! That tile is pretty awesome! It works great next to the stove! Thanks so much for stopping by!!: )

I love love love it!! I love the wood counter tops and the white cabinets!! I love white too!! Did you buy new doors or did you just add molding to them? Great job!!
Katie
Thanks Peggy! I actually added some trim to them. I will be doing a tutorial on that soon : ) Thanks so much for stopping by!
Lisa
My kitchen looks just like yours did before you refinished it, I've been getting things together to do it over on a very small budget and will patiently be waiting the tutorial for the trim on the cabinets, that's what I want to do to mine and white of course!!
Katie
Hi Lisa! I actually just posted both how I build the doors and how I painted them : ) Good luck on yours!
Pamela-FromMyFrontPorchToYours
Your kitchen looks amazing! I bet you never want to leave it.

Corinna - For My Love Of
STUNNING kitchen redo! I didn't see where you mentioned much about the floors. It looks like you kept what was already there. What was there? Why did you keep it? I'd love to know your reasoning! It's the last room I'm planning on tackling in our house since it was half-arsed done before we bought the home, but flooring is number one on my list of curiosities for people who've tried remodeling their kitchen! <3
Katie
Hi Corinna! The floors are what was there when we bought the house. It's actually just laminate, but it totally looks like tile if you aren't paying attention so we left it. One of the main reasons we left it though is because the sub floor has an holder linoleum on it, and we weren't sure if it had asbestos in it, so it was suggested that we leave it or tile over it, and that just was going to cut too much into our budget. One day I would like to lay wood floors through my whole kitchen/dining area, so we will just have to wait until we work up a whole new budget ; )
Taryn @ Design, Dining + Diapers
Katie! this is absolutely stunning! You did such a fabulous job. I love your styling and those countertops are gorgeous.
Katie
Thanks Taryn! Sometimes I find myself just starring at those countertops ; ) Labor of love for sure!
Mariah Leeson (@Giggles_Galore)
Stunning! I love your idea for open storage above the fridge, I always feel like that space is kind of a waste too! Thanks for sharing at The Creative Collection link party!
Katie
Thanks Mariah! My husband argued with me on that but he eventually admitted I was right ; )
Katie @ Little House of Four
Such a beautiful kitchen makeover! I too am a lover of white kitchens and love all the rustic touches you added to yours. Fabulous job!
Katie
Thank you Katie! Glad to know I'm not the only white paint lover ; ) My kids always ask me... "mom, are you going to paint that white too" Well... as a matter of fact, yes! hehe.
Emily
Beautiful! What an amazing transformation!!! Love, love, love everything about this kitchen!
Katie
Thank you so much Emily!! xoxox
Nichole
Katie,
Would you mind briefly explaining how you did your cabinets? Did you replace the doors? (If so where did you get them?) What method did you use to paint them? We recently purchased a home with similar issues & I want to do white cabinets too! Thanks so much!
Katie
Hi Nichole, It was kind of a long process and I will be doing a tutorial next week hopefully on exactly how I did everything, but I did use the same doors. I had Home Depot rip down 1/4" plywood into strips and attached them to the face of my doors. My doors were completely flat to being with so it worked easily for me. It's a little time consuming... mainly the painting, but it's not difficult at all! To paint them I did two coats of primer with 3 coats of an enamel paint sanding in between each. This definitely took the longest! Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!
Sarah
This is so cute! It has a lot of similarities to my own kitchen with the white cupboards and butcher block counters, and you've given me some great ideas for accessorizing it! Great job!
Katie
Thank you Sarah! I just hopped over to your house and it's adorable! I think we might have similar styles ; ) #weareawesome!!!
Sarah
I think so! I love stumbling upon someone else with a similar aesthetic, it really helps me look at my home with fresh eyes. 🙂
Vickie
Awesome job! Love your kitchen! What a difference! Can you please tell me what finish you used on the hinges to match the antique iron knobs and pulls? They look great! Thank you and enjoy your new space!
Katie
Thank you Vickie! I actually got new hinges to go with my knobs and pulls. They are these: http://www.dlawlesshardware.com/anpe3inhipal.html. They aren't the exact same finish, but you would never know it! They go perfectly in my opinion.
Vickie
Looks like a very close match! Thanks for the information, Katie.
Tyler
Your kitchen is adorable - well done!
Katie
Thank you so much Tyler! : )
Vickie
Looks like a very close match! Thanks for the information.
Julie
Wow! You did a FANTASTIC job! Your kitchen looks amazing and I hope you gave yourself a well-deserved pat on the back!
Do you have a tutorial on how you turned your flat panel doors into shaker style doors? I am stuck with flat panel, honey-colored cabinet doors and they are awful! I would love to update my kitchen the way you have but I have not been able to find a tutorial on flat panel doors! Thanks!
Katie
Hi Julie, Thank you so much!! I'm working on that post right now. I was hoping to have it up this week... if my kids will allow ; ) But if not it will definitely be up next week! Thanks for stopping by!
Terri Speer
Great job on your kitchen! 1 summer doesn't sound too bad to me, we are going on 2 years getting ours finished! I hope mine is as awesome looking as yours! I love your style. Love the Grocery sign, looking forward to the tutorial! Enjoy your new kitchen, you deserve it!
Ashley
Thanks so much Terri!! : ) Good luck on yours! Pre blogging... it would have never gotten finished. I'm bad at those last few details. I just like to see the finished product! ; )

Hello! I found you in my search for butcher block countertops. We are building a home, and my vision for the kitchen is similar to yours. How do you like your counters? How is the maintenance? We have six little kids, and I'd love to hear how they are holding up for you! Thanks!!
Ashley
We have 3 kids, and my husband isn't exactly what I'd call "gentle", and they are doing great so far. The finish that I used I think has DEFINITELY helped a lot! I also don't cut anything on them.... I've always used a cutting board, and I still do. There are a few tiny scratches that if you bed over right when the light hits it you can see... but I think those were probably from me dropping tile on them while doing the backsplash. I got smart and covered it with cardboard after about the 4th time, lol. A few people have asked if it stains... I haven't had that problem. I did have a receipt that sat in some water and it bled onto the butcher block... but I just took a sponge to it, and it was like it was never there. I've never really spilled anything colored that I didn't wipe up immediately (surprisingly) so I'm not sure how that would go over, but the waterlox finish is holding up great! I have some leftover butcher block that I'm thinking of spilling some koolaid on and leaving it there overnight to see how it holds up. I'll post that eventually 🙂 Let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks for stopping by!
dorothy
hi iam here in british columbia canada and i love the silver tile backsplash how would i find it here ?I think its beautiful with color and texture.
June
Did you get new doors for your cabinets or just added trim around the perimeter? Are they plywood type doors? Love the remodel! Will be doing something similar myself soon.
Katie
Hi June! They are the original doors. The were the flat ones that I added trim to. I had Home Depot rip down a 4x8 sheet of plywood for me. I'll be doing a full tutorial on how I transformed the doors very soon! Working on editing all the pictures ; ) Thanks for stopping by!
Susan Miller
Fabulous! I love everything you did! I really would like to know where you got the caged light? I have been trying to find some and haven't had any luck.
Sandy Poole
Katie, you did a fabulous make over on your kitchen!!!...It is so charming, and I love how you decorated it!
Melissa in North Carolina
Congrats on your amazing efforts. I, too, love white and am invisioning black countertops with white cabinets for our kitchen. Now that I see your beautiful butcher block counters you have me thinking otherwise. Love your farmhouse cottage kitchen!
Katie
Thank you so much Melissa! We are loving the butcher block! : )
Becky B with Choose Happy
This is ABSOLUTELY incredible! I love every inch of it. Can you come to my house and help me with mine?? 🙂

Your kitchen is gorgeous Katie!! You'd never know that they're not brandnew cabinets! I love your subway tile and everything! And your décor is beautiful! I'd be so excited if you shared it at our link up party on Thursday please 🙂 HOpe you're having a great week!
Katie
Thank you so much Kendra! It's so exciting to finally be done with it! I'll try and catch your next party! I'm so bad about linking up lately... it feels like I haven't sat down since last winter, lol!
Valerie Keinsley
This is BEAUTIFUL! My husband and I just bought a 100-year old farmhouse and the kitchen is driving me CRAZY but redoing it felt so out of reach until I saw this post. It looks amazing!!
Katie
Ohh Thank you so much!! I would LOVE to have an old farmhouse like that to re do! Have fun with it!!
chris aka monkey
saw this on home talk wow what a great job so fresh and sparkling,,,i uses to live in appleton great little town but winter way to white lol xx
Katie
Thanks so much for stopping by! Yes, we love it here, but the winters are pretty brutal... especially coming from Texas, lol!
Denae
Hi! I found your blog while looking for DIY "GROCERY" signs. Did you ever get the tutorial together? I really want to know what font you used... Beautiful transformation!!
Derek
What a fantastic job! Your new kitchen looks great. We are definately going to give your cabinet makeover a try.
Can you tell me what you used on the floor? It goes perfect with your wall colour.
Katie
Thanks so much! The floor is actually just cheap laminate off a roll. I'm not sure where exactly it came from because it was here when we bought the house, but I think I've seen it at either lowes or home depot. It really looks quite real for not being tile : )
Michelle
I love your redesign and it looks like how I want my eventual kitchen re-do to look. I have two questions if you don't mind. 1) Are you concerned about the butcher block countertops getting stained or moldy from water (especially by the sink)? 2) Do you think the white sink will get stained from things like grape juice, tomato sauce, etc?
Great job! So jelly!
Michelle
Katie
Thanks Michelle!! I haven't had an issue at all with the butcher block. I have 3 kids and a not so gentle husband and they have held up great so far, there are a few small scratches, but those mainly happened in the process of redoing the kitchen and me not being careful and dropping tools, lol... but you can only see them if you get eye level and are looking for them. My sink does get a little stained on the bottom, especially if I let something sit overnight... but I've used the cast iron sink cleaner that came with my sink it it gets it right off! I need to go buy an actual bottle of it because I've only been using the sample packet : ) But I don't regret the white sink at all ; )
Beth
Love your kitchen design! So pretty. I really like the grocery sign. What style don't did you use? And how long is the wood. Thanks so much. Awesome job!
Kelly
Love the light fixture in the kitchen. Where did you get that? I just finished adding trim to my flat panel cabinets and painting them white to get the Shaker look too. Now trying to talk my husband into doing the countertops and a new sink. Debating between subway tile, beaded board, or a horizontal plank backsplash. So many good choices, so few kitchens...
Katie
Hi Kelly! Kitchens are so much work, but I think half the work is in the decisions, lol! We ordered ours from lampsplus.com here is the link: http://www.lampsplus.com/products/franklin-park-8-and-one-half-inch-wide-galvanized-outdoor-ceiling-light__4f505.html
Good luck on your kitchen!
Dameter
I love your kitchen! I was wondering what color blue you used on you walls. I'm trying to find a blue that's not too dark but not too light but it's hard to see in pictures. thanks!
Katie
Thanks so much! It's Palladian Blue from Benjamin Moore. It's a very good blue, but it does look quite different in varying lights. Sometimes it has a bit of a gray look but that was one of the reasons I picked it : ) It's very versatile for a blue!
Monica
Hello can I ask what brand and color grout you used?
Christine Ford
I am also wondering what color of grout you used. I am getting ready to install subway tiles after painting my cabinets white. I want to get it right! I'm so scared of choosing the wrong grout color.
Mary smith
What color grout did you use. Desperate to know.
Heather
I love your kitchen and am using it as inspiration for a kitchen update. I already have butcher block countertops and white cabinets and I want to install subway tile. What color of grout did you use? Thanks!
jill
Great remodel! Where did you get your sink faucet? It's so pretty.
I can't reach above our fridge either--working on the husband to open the shelving for a pretty display. Thanks for the inspiration:)
Lisa @ Farmhouse on Boone
Love it! You did a great job!
Katie
Thanks so much Lisa!!
Jill
I was wondering what kind of grout you used for your backsplash. Thanks!
Katie
Hi Jill, I just used regular pre mixed grout in Delorean Gray, I got mine at Home Depot. Depending on your grout size you will need either sanded or unsanded grout, but they should be able to tell you what you need at the store for sure! Thanks for stopping by!
Diana
I would love to know where you got your faucet. What kind is it?
kim cochran
Hi there! LOVE your kitchen!!
Can you tell me what color grey grout you used?? Thank you!!
kim cochran
OOPS never mind! Just found the answer!
Toni
Why color of grout did you use?
Toni
*what
Auto correct on phones!
Jonathan
How did you cover the ductwork to make the open cabinet above the microwave? Did you just build a wood cover, or did you buy it? We are hoping to do something similar in our kitchen soon, and are looking for options.
Thanks!
Kankana
Hi Katie, I was looking for ideas about what to do to renovate my solid wooden kitchen doors and I love your shaker kitchen, what great ideas! I can't quite see the hinges in detail, but they look lovely, can you please give me a close up photo and details? Many thanks 😊
Rossario Ross
There so many wonderful things about this kitchen, I like the light and bright feel. I could go on and on. You did a great job!
