Come take a look at this Historic Boys Bathroom that gets a modern makeover with a bold shiplap accent wall with an original tub and sink!
We've officially knocked out another bathroom in the Cherished House. Our first bathroom makeover was our downstairs industrial black and white bathroom. Next we worked on the other upstairs bathroom, and finally here we are, wrapping up our Boys Bathroom! Technically there was another bathroom in the basement that was just in HORRIBLE condition so we demo'd that one and left the plumbing. We are still undecided on if we will do anything with it.
But let's talk about our Boys Bathroom Makeover. Technically my boys are the only ones who use this bathroom, which plays well into the fact that I apparently prefer masculine bathrooms. Or so I've been told ;). Ok, let's start from the beginning.... here's a few before photos.
Boys Bathroom Makeover
If I'm being totally honest this bathroom was in the best condition out of the others when we moved in. The floor had obviously been replaced, but the shower surround was horrendous. In fact we actually had water pouring into our kitchen one day because water was getting behind the tile and leaking down. With the other two out of commission we discovered the leak! It's been a journey to say the least!
I did a little refresh since this was our main bathroom for a while and scrubbed it beyond reason and got it looking like this...
Boys Bathroom Renovation Before & After
The bead-board and walls were still in need of repair. We hired out the shower tile due to the plaster walls and getting everything leveled out for the hardi backer wasn't easy! Our contractor did a fantastic job though!
My goal in this bathroom was to blend the existing flooring (while not my favorite) into some kind of design that I liked. I'm still not loving the flooring, but this house is an investment and we just couldn't justify the cost of ripping it out. So I wanted to pair this historic tub and the not so great floor with a classic subway tile. Typically I go with a gray grout when using subway tile. However, I went with a warm gray/almost tan color to blend in with the floor tile. Overall it made a world of difference.
Vertical Shiplap in Bathroom
The other big project in here, other than paint, was the wall treatment. It had some bead-board planks but most were falling off the wall, or there was big gaps in between and it just needed to be replaced. We decided to go with a vertical shiplap and add a bold color in here. Using the same color as my fireplace, because it was a good bridge between the warmer colors in here and my preference for cooler tones.
Bathroom Renovation
Here's all the changes we made to this bathroom:
- Painted Walls (Behr Swiss Coffee)
- Installed and Painted Shiplap (Sherwin Williams Cast Iron)
- Painted Trim (Sherwin Williams Trim Paint)
- Installed new shower curtain rod
- New Shower Curtain
- New toilet
- Painted Door (Behr Cracked Pepper)
- Installed new vanity light
- Installed new ceiling light
- New Shower tile
In additional to all that, when we first bought the house we did have all windows replaced, so that's new as well.
Small Bathroom Storage Ideas
Obviously one of the biggest things the bathrooms in our home lack is storage. In this bathroom all my kids' belongings are in the medicine cabinet (behind the mirror). Then I added a little teak shelving unit for towels, wash rags, and anything extra that would normally be stored in a cabinet. It's not the most storage ever, but it certainly helps!
Historic Bathroom gets a Modern Makeover
My favorite thing about this whole bathroom is the original register that I was able to spray paint copper. I just adore how it looks against the darker shiplap!
The rest of my house definitely leans a little more modern, but I feel like sometimes you just have to work with what you have and it still fits in and ended up saving us tons of money. I definitely wasn't willing to do anything to risk that tub because it's amazing in all it's old glory!
In addition to the bathtub, another reason I didn't want to rip out the tile (other than cost) was the potential for damaging the sink. There is a stamp from 1904, which is so rare these days! Many of the historical features were stripped from this house when we bought it, so I just couldn't bear to take out anything else!

I love the tub!!!! That is so so cool; didn't know they even made a square tub; the new commode looks really really good with the sink and tub also! I think the color is good and the shower curtain softens everything. What is with the tile at the top of the sink? I'd take that out or paint over it!

It's true he didn't have enough money for some furnishings, so he found a way out of the situation - he went to a website, looked up fifa rankings and made some sports bets based on them, and that way he was able to complete the renovation. This is advice for those who do not have enough money for something.
