From studs to tile this Small Bathroom Renovations takes on a major transformation through the use of quality products!
Every time I wrap up in this room I can let myself thing that one day we will actually finish this whole house. Bathrooms and kitchens are two of the most costly spaces to renovate and we've already knocked out our kitchen, kitchenette, and downstairs bathroom. Today I'll be sharing the full small bathroom renovation we did on this upstairs bathroom starting from the studs.
Small Bathroom Renovation Before and After
Let's start at the beginning and do a quick recap. We bought this house last fall and there was a brief period where we rented a dumpster and just started demoing spaces because of how badly their condition was. This bathroom was SO bad I don't even think I cleaned it. We immediately ripped a bunch of stuff out and stapled some plastic sheeting to the walls and kinda pretended it wasn't there anymore. Well let's fast forward to this summer and we figured we should probably do something about this black hole in our upstairs hallway. You can check out all the before information in this post. Here's a quick little reminder of how this space started out.
Now I know the before picture doesn't look terrible... but that's only because I didn't zoom in on the toilet that had clearly sat there uncleaned for a good decade. I'm not even exaggerating. But overall the changes we wanted to make were to remove the nasty moldy window in the shower, create a closet in the bedroom that's to the left of the bathroom wall, and make sure this whole space is up to code and watertight.
Choosing PURPLE XP for our Small Bathroom Renovation
We ultimately decided to go with PURPLE XP Drywall for our walls and PermaBase Cement Board for the shower.(You can read about the installation here).PURPLE drywall is not regular drywall. It’s resistant to moisture, mold and mildew, and can provide additional solutions for challenges you might run into with common remodels. From water, sound, and everyday abuse, PURPLE has a product that can help ensure your walls are ready for your life. My dad always taught me, when you do something, do it right. When you're taking the time to gut an entire bathroom I highly suggest choosing quality products. We were very secure in our decision to use PURPLE XP in our upstairs bathroom.
I probably changed my design for this bathroom a hundred times because of all the things I had to change along the way to make sure everything was done to code. While demoing this bathroom down to the studs we found floor joists that needed to be repaired. Ultimately I wasn't able to change the footprint quite like I wanted.
Modern Classic Bathroom Design
The majority of our house is still plaster and lathe. Making these upgrades helps ensure this house will last. We do however want our sheetrock to still match the existing plaster walls so we went with a flat finish. Our contractor did an amazing job and the PURPLE XP drywall turned out amazing.
Let's take a look at how this small bathroom renovation turned out!
Marble Shower Tile in a Small Bathroom
For the shower I knew I wanted marble. I used subway tile in our downstairs bathroom, and I plan to use it in our 3rd. (Which is the most historical looking bathroom). In this space I needed something a little different, and a little more luxurious feeling. Marble is a classic design staple so it was a natural choice for me.
For the flooring we went with a marble look as well with mosaic hexagon tiles.
Pedestal Sink in Small Bathroom
One of the biggest compromises I had to make for this space was the vanity. Because the plumbing couldn't be moved the toilet is on the opposite wall of the sink. This didn't allow for the depth of a full vanity. I went with a pedestal sink because it was what the space needed, and it's pretty historically accurate as well.
Since the sink lacks storage we added this black cabinet for everyday toiletries.
I'll be sharing more about the process behind my design over the next few weeks and all the products I used from Build.Com, so for now, let's take a little stroll through this space!

Great information. Thanks!

This bathroom was SO bad I don’t even think I cleaned it.
Gigi
Very pretty, but that cabinet is the only storage...would NOT work, not realistic to house all the necessary bathroom “stuff”. Sorry, I still want a tub., especially if it’s a guest area bath...sometimes you need a tub to get away & chill!
Ashley
Hi Gigi, Thanks so much for sharing your opinion! I know some people definitely prefer a tub, and we do have one restroom with a tub, but we prefer showers personally. And while some people might not find one cabinet enough storage, we've made the personal decision to minimize what we use and only have things we absolutely need. It's definitely just a personal preference, but we find that by eliminating clutter we can lower our anxiety... but everyone operates differently and I totally get that! That's the beauty of making your house work for you as a family/individual!
Lilly
Beautiful! Do you have the tile information handy? Where it's from, name and color? I can't find it. Thanks
Ashley
Hi Lilly, I will be doing a full post with those details soon, but here my affiliate link to the marble tile: https://fave.co/35davG9 And this is the floor tile: https://www.flooranddecor.com/rectified-tile/uptown-antracite-matte-porcelain-tile-100566744.html#q=6x24+tile&start=7

With your talent Ashley, I'd look for a decorative counsel table with a shelf underneath and drop in the sink! You can do it, I know you can!! You could put some nice baskets below and fill with towels and a ton of other stuff.
I don't like bathtubs but I will say that you have to have a tub somewhere in the house for resale if nothing else!
Greenboard sheetrock is code here in AZ; it is for wet areas. Is that the same as your purple board?
You know an easy way to clean a shower floor??? Buy one of those large, flat , round stoppers and plug the drain; turn on the water and when it gets to the right height, pour in non-chlorine cleaner. Odoban is a nonchlorine cleaning product that kills 99.9% of germs and is safe for colors and I assume grout as well. Runs about $10/gallon. Easy peasy and very very clean.
Love that marble!
Ashley
Hi Mary, We do have a bathroom with a tub, however the other two bathrooms in the house didn't provide enough space for one. That just has to do with the age of our house and the awkward floor plans. Thanks for the tip about cleaning! We didn't use the purple board in the shower, we did however use their cement board that is rated for wet spaces like showers 😉

I think your bathroom concept is a brilliant decision!
I'm interested in the flooring because it's what I pictured for a new do over in Spring.
I knew I wanted long tiles to form a Chevron pattern. Can you offer up some information regarding the materials used?
Regards,
Carole

Your tile combination floor/wall looks great. We did the opposite, gray subway tile shower walls and (faux) marble floor tile. Floor is almost finished and I'm lovin' our bathroom so far, as much as I do yours! Good job!

Renovation is the process of restoring or modifying an existing structure or object to make it more suitable for a new purpose. In some cases, renovation can be a necessary step in maintaining a building or object in usable condition. In other cases, renovation can be an expensive and time-consuming process used to improve the appearance or function of a building.suspended oil heaters"

Hi
Clear communication between homeowners and contractors is essential for a smooth and successful construction project. By familiarizing themselves with home building concepts, homeowners can articulate their needs, preferences, and concerns more effectively. Understanding industry terminology and construction principles helps foster a productive dialogue, ensuring that both parties are on the same page.

Exemplary workmanship achieved. The tiles now gleam as brilliantly as polished concrete in our collaborative pojects with Polished Concrete 1 https://polishedconcrete1.com . It's worth noting that they are an exceptional concrete polishing company, primarily catering to commercial-scale projects. Regrettably, they may not be available for residential floor polishing, despite how spectacular it would look in a home setting.
