It feels so good to finally make some progress on the upstairs bathroom. We had a hard time finding a contractor, but after lots of searching I finally found a dependable company to help me get our walls up and renovation finished. You can see the before pictures in my previous bathroom post, but the design has actually changed quite a bit.
I originally wanted to move the footprint around pretty significantly, but once we got the subfloor up and the rest of the demo completed it just wasn't possible with the layout of everything. So I'm sharing our updated design plan below as well as some progress pictures. Overall this bathroom will be similar to our downstairs bathroom, because what can I say, I'm a sucker for black and white. But I'm hoping my fun idea with the shower curtain really makes it stand apart. That will just have to be a little surprise though! 😉
I originally wanted to move the toilet around to allow for a bigger vanity, but unfortunately that was the main thing I wasn't able to do. I was still able to add the closet for my sons room though, which left us with a nice size stand up shower and a more functional bedroom space.
I'm so happy we went with the PURPLE XP Drywall. It resists moisture, mold, and mildew, making it the perfect option for any room with exposure to water (like our bathroom). We live in a very old house that wasn't properly taken care of, so being able to restore not only the historical aspects where possible, but improve upon the quality is a very rewarding process. Now we know that in this bathroom we don't have to worry about any mold or mildew. And with 3 kids the peace of mind is a big bonus for us!
Overall I wanted to outline of a few reasons we ultimately decided to go with the PURPLE XP Drywall:

For the shower we used the PermaBase cement board. This is the product you will want to use for wet areas, like behind the tile in showers or tubs, under flooring or backsplashes. Basically anywhere that you can expect water.
After speaking with my contractor one of his favorite parts of installing this material was how easily it cut. Not to mention all the other benefits I listed above, but this is also great for DIY options. Over all the years of renovations I've learned two very important things.
- It's ok to call in a professional when you are uncomfortable doing something.
- The quality of products really matter in your final product! So make sure and go with something that's sure to leave you satisfied!
When you are putting in the time and money for renovations, especially in a bathroom and kitchen, it's always best to do it right, starting with your walls!
