Give a unique and homemade Christmas Gift by making DIY Christmas Potpourri with the wonderful scents of cranberries, oranges, cinnamon, cloves, & rosemary.
Hello friends! I'm back with another Christmas Tutorial, and this one even smells good! I've joined some lovely ladies today to share some DIY Gift Ideas for the holidays, and I'm sharing how to make Christmas Potpourri. If I'm being totally honest I've always been pretty careful about ingredients and the type of food we eat. I'm not perfect at ALL, but I've always tried my best. But ever since my sister opened a clean beauty bar I've been made more away of all the hidden ingredients in products and one of the biggest places companies hide things is in "fragrances". So today I'm sharing how to make Christmas Potpourri with fruit, seasonings, and herbs.
How to Dehydrate Oranges in the Oven
This is a pretty simple process, though drying the fruit does take some time. Make sure and give yourself a day for that. The process is super easy, it's just slow going to dehydrate the fruit in the oven.
To begin the dehydrating process, I would start with the citrus, I found it took longer than the cranberries and herbs. I sliced mine pretty thick mainly because I didn't want them to burn and be pretty for pictures, but you could go a little thinner than I did and it would shave off some time.
Once the oranges were sliced I placed them on parchment paper and put them in the oven at 200 degrees for at least 8 hours. Like I said the time will vary depending on how thick you slice them, but just keep an eye out and you'll see them start to dry out. I found mine to be done right when they started getting a brownish color to them.
How to Dehydrate Cranberries in the Oven
The dehydrate the cranberries first I put them in a metal bowl and poured boiling water over them. This allows them to "pop". If you've ever made homemade cranberry sauce you know the sound! I let them sit in the water for about 10 minutes and then drained them. Get them as dry as you can without squishing them and then place them on parchment paper as well. (If any cranberries didn't pop in the hot water, just make a little slit in them with a knife to allow the moisture to evaporate in the oven).
Then I put those in at 200 degrees for a few hours then turned the oven off and let them sit over night. I did end up turning them back on the next morning because they weren't completely dried out yet. You just have to keep an eye out until they are dry, but you are dehydrating these at such a low temperature you shouldn't have to stress too much.
How to Dry Herbs in the Oven
The herbs are the easiest. Just place them on parchment paper, but them in the oven at 200 degrees for about 30 minutes and you should be good to go. You'll just want to make sure they are in fact dry.
In addition to the fruit and herbs, I also used some seasonings like cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and vanilla bean.
How to Make Homemade Stovetop Potpourri
Once you have everything dried and ready to use you just simple assemble your potpourri by placing all the ingredients into a jar.
Once everything is assembled place the lid on the jar, and you could even tie one of my free gift tag printables around the jar. These make perfect teachers gifts!
