Read these tips on how to create a kid friendly bathroom where Ashley shares how to refresh your bathroom without breaking the bank!
We just recently finished our downstairs bathroom, and I have to be honest, it's not the most kid friendly bathroom. Since we do in fact have kids I wanted to make sure our bathroom upstairs (where their bedrooms are) would be totally functional for them! The first thing I wanted to focus on was our bathtub. It's an old original tub that completely stole my heart. When I saw the Peerless SideKick™ Shower System I knew I'd be able to make this tub work for my kids! Let's talk about some of the changes we made to make this a Kid Friendly bathroom!
This bathroom is literally the only space in this entire house that didn't immediately need to be ripped out and completely redone. Don't get me wrong, it definitely needs some work, but it's the last on this list for now and it's amazing what a little refresh can do to make a space feel like a whole new room.
Add a Kid Friendly Shower Head
We used the Peerless Sidekick™ Shower System in this bathroom, which is an absolute perfect fit for our family. This shower system offers single or shared operation of the shower head and wand which includes 5 spray patterns, a pet attachment, cleaning attachment, and a soft waterfall setting (perfect for small kids).
Here are a few reasons this shower system is great for everyone, but especially for my kiddos:
- Pause button that reduces overspray and water waste
- Extra-long 84" metal hose provides extra reach
- Volume adjusting dial to easily accommodate kids of all ages
- Soft waterfall setting for rinsing kids hair without spraying water in their face
Organize Kids Bathtubs
Our tub doesn't have edges where you can actually place shampoo bottles and soap. At first, I found that extremely frustrating, until I realized it made me teach my kids how to keep an organized shower. We purchased this shower caddy that is made to accommodate the hose for the shower system. This is a life saver for my kids, and no more falling bottles when they get in and out of the shower.
Make Cleaning Kids' Bathrooms Easy
Cleaning is something I firmly believe all kids should take part in. I have two boys... whom I believe should clean the toilet (cause boys miss quite often)! I like to make sure I have easy things for my kids to use. For example, we put Norwex Envirocloths all around the house because they don't require any chemicals and help prevent the spreading of germs.
And now my kids can help keep the shower clean by using the Sidekick's tub and tile cleaning attachment. This attachment is perfect for cleaning the tub, especially after giving my messy goldendoodle a bath with the pet scrubber attachment. Dogs are basically kids right? So it's really a kid and pet friendly shower! ; )
Small Bathroom Storage Options
Having a place for everything is an important lesson for kids. Even if you can't follow through all the time, try... try hard! My kids are naturally very messy (no clue where they get that from, definitely not their unorganized mother). No but really... I'm not naturally organized. I need specific places to put items or I just set them on the nearest flat surface. Having a specific storage location is important, especially when you are dealing with a bathroom that doesn't have much storage to begin with. I put this wooden shelf to help keep track of all the little things and provide a place for towels. I also have an awesomely deep medicine cabinet behind that mirror!
Add a Step Stool
By giving your kids a step stool they will find it much easier to wash hands, brush teeth, and get ready for the day! I painted this stool for this bathroom. I wanted it to be fun for my kids, still maintain my style, and hold on to the original features of this bathroom. I came up with this fun plaid design that I've seen on lots of black and white shirts. Like this one.
If you are looking to make your bathroom a little more kid friendly, I hope these tips helped inspire you in some ways to make your space work for you!

Hi, Thanks for the coming to me at the right time. I have been thinking to build up a small bathroom for my kids. I guess your guideline would be helpful to me when I am going for making this. If you had more insight into it, I would much appreciate it. Keep up with good work.

Love the post, Ashley! I love how fresh and clean your bathroom looks and how you tailored it to the needs of your family. I have never heard of that shower system but it looks like it makes tile cleaning so much easier. I try to get my grout and tile professionally cleaned at least once a year just to give it a good deep clean but that would be so helpful for in between maintenance.

Do you happen to know what paint color is used? It looks very close to a true gray. I'm definitely looking into the shower system!

I have been thinking to develop a little washroom for my children. I surmise your rule would be useful to me when I am going for making this. On the off chance that you had more knowledge into it, I would much value it.

You actually went into great depth on making a restroom kid-friendly. You have written about it nicely and described it, but here is a suggestion: you could include a little more information regarding the kids' restroom, such as a "To Do List" that has a checklist. Putting on clean clothing, brushing your hair, washing your hands and face, brushing your teeth, flossing, etc. are a few examples.

You should get one of those humidity sensing switches for your bath fan so you don't have to worry about your kids forgetting to turn on the vent.
