Supply List:
Some links may be to similar items when exact items couldn't be found online.
This is a great kid's craft, but since we are using a hot glue gun, make sure there is proper adult supervision and help.
Cut Paper Strips:
My finished shamrock measures 5.25 x 5 inches, but there will be a bit of variety from one to the next.
Begin by cutting strips of paper using a paper trimmer. If you have never used a paper trimmer before, I show exactly how in the video above.
- Green
- 4 strips 1 x 8 inches
- 1 strip 1 x 7 inches
- Blue
- 3 strips 1 x 7.5 inches
- Purple
- 3 strips 1 x 7 inches
- Red
- 3 strips 1 x 6.5 inches
- Orange
- 3 strips 1 x 6 inches
- Yellow
- 3 strips 2 x 5.5 inches
Two of the strips of green paper need to be scored in two places.
You can still do this with your paper cutter all you need is an embossing stylus.
On the 1 x 7 inch green strip, score at 3.75 and 3.24.
On one of the 1 x 8 inch green strips, score at 3.5 and 4.5.
Fold the strips on their score lines.
These are the only two strips that need to be scored.
Shamrock Leaves:
Here are all of my strips of paper cut accordingly.
The next set of steps repeats with each strip of cardstock.
Start with the smallest yellow strip and fold in half. Press with a bone folder to get a nice crisp fold line.
Open the strip, place it on the edge of a table, and pull from each side of the fold line.
This will help curl your strip.
Apply a very thin line of hot glue along the top edge of the strip of paper.
Press and hold the two ends together to create a heart shape.
Repeat so you have paper hearts from each color of cardstock.
Next, starting with the small yellow heart, apply a thin line of hot glue along the bottom fold of the heart.
Insert the yellow heart into the next smallest, the orange heart, and press the bottoms together to adhere.
Repeat, gluing all of the different heart sizes together.
This is one leaf to our shamrock. Repeat the above steps two more times to create all three leaves.
Assembling the Shamrock:
Glue the ends together of the folded strip that measures 1 x 7 inches.
Then glue the smaller strip inside the longer 1 x 8 inch strip.
Fold the top of the shamrock stem at about .5 inches.
This little fold is where to place the first shamrock leaf. Glue it in place with some hot glue.
On the opposite side, glue the second shamrock leaf.
Lastly, hot glue the third leaf on top.
The finished shamrock is so cute!
Optional Hanger:
If you want to hang your shamrocks, it is really pretty to add a hanger.
Cut a length of baker's twine, double the length that you want it to hang.
Bring the two ends of the twine together and tie a tight knot.
Hot glue the knot inside the crease of the top shamrock leaf.
When the glue is cool, the shamrock is ready to hang!
This paper shamrock craft is so cute and fun to make. Sure to bring some luck this St Patrick's Day!
