Learning how to paint a home interior with these tips will help you be more efficient and leave you with professional results.
When we bought this house I remember falling in love with it's character and charm. I also remember when we got the keys standing in the middle of the living room staring into all the empty spaces thinking to myself, "I have to paint all of this". Sometimes you have to paint a home interior out of necessity, and sometimes you might just want to change the look. Either way I'm going to walk you through a few tips and tricks on How to Paint a Home Interior with a Paint Sprayer quickly and easily with the Wagner FLEXiO 3000 Paint Sprayer.
In our house, the upstairs was in much more need of paint than the downstairs. We already had plans to remodel the kitchen and bathroom, so we decided to wait and paint the downstairs as we remodeled those spaces. However, the upstairs is at least 1000 square feet so we had our work cut out for us. So let's talk about some of the ways we tackled this project in the quickest amount of time.
Supplies:
- Wagner FLEXiO 3000 Paint Sprayer
- Painter's Tape
- Drop Cloths
- Pre-taped Painter's Plastic
- Rags
- Paint Shield
Tips for Painting Your Whole House
- Make a plan. By planning out your days it will keep you motivated and on schedule to get all the painting done when you need it done.
- Prepare the whole space. If you have furniture, move everything to the center or out of your way and use your drop cloths, painter's tape, and pre-taped plastic to cover anything you don't want painted.
- Choose your colors and know where you're using them before you start. I suggest choosing one or two colors at most if you need to get a whole space painted quickly. You can always go back and do accent colors once you get everything moved-in and livable. If you have a little bit of extra time and want to do more than two colors then stick with one color until you have painted every wall using that color. Even if you are changing rooms its faster to complete the colors first.
- Do all your prep work at once. I know this sounds daunting, but if you plan a day to get all your prep work completed it will streamline the process. Nothing is worse than having to stop the painting process, clean up, find the prep supplies, and begin taping again. Get it all done together and you will be grateful.
- Create a space for all your paint supplies. Set up a foldable table or an area in your garage where you can keep everything you are using. Searching for tools and things is fun and all, but it's also a huge time waster.
- Using a Wagner Paint Sprayer not only speeds up the process, but it provides better coverage, almost always eliminating the need for a second coat.
How to Paint a Home Interior with a Paint Sprayer
Preparation
Preparation is key with painting, especially when you are painting large areas. When you want to paint your whole house, or in my case the entire upstairs it's much quicker to use a paint sprayer. Even with the preparation and cleanup I still found it faster than rolling and brushing, especially when you consider the need for extra coats when rolling/brushing.
To properly prepare the space you need to make sure all furniture is removed, or at least moved to an area of the room that isn't in your way. It's also important that all surfaces are clean and dust-free before beginning. Cover everything with drop cloths and tape off any areas you don't want painted. I use a combination of drop cloths and pre-taped painter's plastic. You can also use a paint shield to make sure your coverings don't move while spraying.
Once you've completed this step for all the areas you plan to paint then it's time to move on to the next step.
Using the Wagner Paint Sprayer
- Always make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions and ensure that you have practiced before beginning on your surface.
- It will feel more natural to back away from the surface, but you need to maintain a distance of 6"-8".
- Use long, full strokes when spraying making sure not to change the angle of the sprayer as you move. The tip of the nozzle should remain directly pointed at the wall.
- Always start moving before beginning to spray so that you are already in motion before the paint is released.
- As you end your stroke release the trigger while you are still in motion.
- Wipe the nozzle periodically to ensure there is no dried paint build-up.
- Adjust settings as necessary depending on the material you are spraying. Suggestions for the settings can be found in the manual.
- If you are painting your ceiling and walls different colors, I always suggest ceilings first. They require less prep work than walls and trim. Once you paint the ceilings, let them dry and the tape them off. Use the proper painter's tape for freshly painted walls. If you have someone to help you can have them hold the paint shield for you as an alternative.
Prime Surface First if Necessary
You don't necessarily always have to prime your walls, but I very highly suggest doing so if you are painting over a darker color, raw wood, or an old finish. Our house is very old, I could tell that it had not been painted in a while and primer just really helped to freshen things up and give us a blank slate for painting. If you leave tape on the wall for multiple coats (i.e. primer & paint), try using a utility knife to release the tape to avoid peeling paint off the wall when the tape is removed. If you don't end up priming I always suggest removing the painter's tape as quickly as possible.

Make sure and read over the tips I suggested above. Now, let's get started painting. Like I mentioned before, pick one color at a time if you've chosen multiple colors. Just make sure and think through your process and that it makes sense for your house. The instruction manual really does lay it all out for you, just make sure you don't skip over anything.
