How to Make a DIY Easy Dollar Store Autumn “Hello” Rug

October 14, 2019 By: Katie6 Comments

Use a Dollar Store Rug and some acrylic craft paint to make an adorable custom Autumn “Hello” rug in less than an hour. An easy DIY craft tutorial idea.

Hello again Crafty Blog Stalkers! It’s Kelli, from KsCraftShack! I love the Dollar Store, and I want to share with you my newest dollar store decor idea! I love holiday doormats, but spending $20+ for one mat that will only be out for a few weeks just doesn’t appeal to me. Granted, that’s the way all holiday and seasonal decor works, but when you can do it for less, why not?

This fun, easy to customize Autumn “Hello” rug can be finished in just an hour!

How to Make an Autumn “Hello” Rug

The first step is to decide how you want your rug layout to go. A piece of chalk is the perfect tool for sketching it out. If you don’t like it, just use a damp rag to wipe the chalk off and try again!  Any chalk left on the rug will be hidden by the paint.

Next, start painting! I outlined my “Hello” first using the autumn colors red, yellow and orange.

Take a larger round paintbrush, or a round pouncer brush to make paint splotches all over the rug

I used the red, orange, yellow and copper metallic paints to cover the entire rug in paint splotches.  I love how it reminds me of Autumn leaves!

After I had covered the entire rug with the pretty Autumn colors, I went back over the letters with a little white paint to help them stand out better.

It’s so cheery and welcoming! I love how it turned out.  The acrylic paint holds up to some weather elements, but the direct sun for too long will fade the color a bit.  Next year it will be easy to make another one though! Thanks so much for letting me share with you again!
