Love the home you have and get the look you want with these 8 DIY Home Improvement Projects you can actually accomplish yourself!
When you have a home and you enjoy decorating it can be very overwhelming to do all the things you want without putting yourself under a mountain of debt. This fixer-upper we’re currently working on has been full of huge renovations, like remodeling our kitchen, bathroom, and creating a kitchenette upstairs. These were all very expensive gut jobs that were absolutely necessary. However, even though this is my full-time job, everybody hits a wall and you have to stop spending so much money and focus on obtainable, affordable home renovation projects! I’ve gathered up a few ideas from our years of DIYing and I’ll even be sharing some new ones soon! You can follow along with me on Instagram to see what I’m currently working on. Let’s take a look at these affordable DIY Home Improvement Projects.
Add Wall Treatments
Wall treatments, if done in a smaller space, can be quite affordable! We added board and batten in my daughter’s room to cover up some of the cracking plaster. I would never suggest covering up something that is an issue, but old plaster is known to crack… so while the structural integrity was fine, the visual appeal wasn’t at its best. Adding a wall treatment allowed us to affordably make this room look much better without completely gutting it!
As homeowners, we often need to make constant upgrades to our homes. It's all about choosing the right one at the right time to keep up with our home remodeling ideas!
Paint Walls
You’ve heard this a million times before, but that’s because it’s true! Paint makes a whole room look totally transformed without breaking the bank, and you will be so happy you made this simple change.
If you are over colored walls wallpaper is trending pretty heavily right now! There are so many different kinds of wallpaper available too! The best part is that you can even get removable wallpaper which can oftentimes be great if you like to change up your decor schemes often (think kids rooms).
Add Storage for Organization
Storage isn’t a huge DIY project, but adding storage space can greatly improve the look of a room when you actually give yourself a place to put all those things that drive you crazy! Focus on problem areas and you will see major results. Get tutorials for our Faux Floating Shelf and Pipe Shelves to help you tame some of those items!
Paint Vinyl Floors
Do you have ugly tile or vinyl floors? Did you know you can paint those? Even if you want to replace your floors one day in the future, this is a cheap way to enjoy your home until the time comes!
Frame a Bathroom Mirror
So many bathrooms come with a standard, plain bathroom mirror. Don’t run out and buy an expensive one, instead just a few pieces of wood can provide you with a custom look.
Paint Kitchen Cabinets
Kitchens are always the place we women want to look nice. Probably because we spend so much time in there ;). Just like the paint on walls can totally transform a room, painting cabinets can change the whole style of your kitchen.
Make Your Own Decor
Sometimes we just want our houses to feel like “us”. Consider DIYing a few decorations to really bring a room to life! You’ll be amazed at what a few things on the wall can do! Get the tutorial for this large wooden sign here!
Create Functional Spaces
If you have a space in your home that’s just gathering junk and making you feel like your home is unorganized, turn it into a functional, organized space. You’ll be so happy you made this little change!
Tips for Choosing the Right Home Renovation Projects
Some of us might be in a new home, some of us might be in a fixer-upper, some are in rentals and some might even be in a builder grade home that just needs a little personality thrown in. No matter what your living situation often times I suggest keeping your resale value in the back of your mind when trying to determine what projects to tackle first.
Ask yourself...
Is this your forever home?
Are you trying to increase the value of your home?
Whatever home remodeling project you want to accomplish needs to make sense for your current situation. Be careful not to over-improve and one of the most important things is to recognize when you need to hire professionals and/or a general contractor to help with your projects! This is especially important if you have some large projects on your to-do list!
Some bigger Home Improvements Projects you might also want to tackle
Install new countertops
We have installed both butcher block countertops and concrete countertops. I will openly admit that butcher block was far easier, but the concrete countertops where not as scary as I thought they would be. Once we got going it all just kind of worked out. Maybe it was beginners luck, haha!
Replace Appliances
Appliances can completely change the look of a kitchen. If it's in your budget and you are in need of new appliances I have a whole guide here on choosing the right appliances.
Spruce up Closets
It's a well-known fact that one of the top items on potential buyer's wish lists when looking at potential homes is the closets. I took my youngest son's closet and gave it a completely new functional design. It wasn't large, but it functions so much better now! And I'll say this now and forever... if you have the opportunity to add drawers to your closet space - do it! We barely had closets in this old home, but in our new home, we will all have drawers in closets so there isn't as much of a need for a dresser and can reduce clutter as much as possible
Make sure Functional Projects are taken care of
Not all projects are fun. Sometimes we have to do things like make sure our basement is dry and functional. Attics should have proper insulation. And anytime you can make your home as energy-efficient as possible, DO IT! These are items that aren't as fun, and don't necessarily affect your home's curb appeal, but are extremely important if you ever go to sell your home!
I hope some of these ideas have helped you! Now... go get started ; )

This is a great idea, especially during this pandemic where all of us are not allowed to go outside unless it is needed. It's a perfect way to kill some time while staying at home, renovating rooms or kitchens and adding storage or secret passage on your home or even playing with color combinations. I'm glad that many people have been sharing their amazing ideas because it's a big help actually.

Wow! What a beautiful renovation. I had no idea that homes used to have two main entrances but it makes sense that they would have a formal entry and an informal one
