Summer is coming to an end much quicker than I expected. The change of seasons is always bittersweet for me. I love each one for what it is, and in the summer I love how easy it is to just head outside. With that said though I am looking forward to the temps cooling down as we head towards late summer/early fall. When the temperature drops I love spending more time outside with my kids. I'm not a hot, sun shining kind of person... I don't like to sweat and I personally prefer to need a light jacket.
When we moved into this house at the end of last year we never really did anything with our backyard. Everything just kinda got thrown back there and it's just sat that way all summer while we worked on our Laundry Room and other various small projects around the house! We decided we would start working on our outdoor space so we can enjoy the beautiful Fall evenings outside around the fire pit. To do this we desperately needed some comfy seating. Now I'll be honest... I HATE these stupid rocks all over my yard. They aren't level, my kids think they are meant for the grass, my dog kicks them up all over the place when he runs, it's really a moms worst nightmare. While I have plans to get rid of these one day, it's definitely not happening this year, so I just have to deal with it! First world problems right? lol!!
Well I've been babbling on about rocks and weather long enough! Today I'm here to share the free plans for this DIY Modern Outdoor Chair with Buildsomething.com. If you've never visited their site it is FULL of amazing (and free) building plans! You can search the plans by space and I'm sure you will find something you love and just have to have! ; )
Here's what you will need for these chairs...
Supplies:
- Kreg HD (I connected mine to my K4 Pocket System)
- Ryobi Cordless Drill
- Ryobi Impact Driver
- Ryobi Table Saw
- Ryobi Orbital Sander
- Sandpaper
- 2 Boxes Kreg HD Screws
- 2 ½" Wood Screws
- (4) 2 x 4 x 144" Redwood Boards
My favorite thing about this chair is that it's made entirely from 2x4's! That makes it so much easier when buying lumber. It really streamlines the process!
I also used Redwood lumber because it is naturally resists insects, decaying, warping and shrinking. Redwood is definitely more expensive than your typical pine, but we knew these would sit out in the elements since we don't have a covered porch and wanted to make sure they would last! Definitely worth the investment!
I haven't stained or sealed these chairs yet, but I definitely plan to! Still making some decisions on the overall look of our backyard.

Love this idea, question: are your cushions purchased or made? We used to have something similar to these chairs, that have a deep seat and I'm wondering where you were able to find or make economical cushions for them. They are crazy expensive!!
Michelle
Hello Katie, love your chairs! Like Jennifer, I'm also curious about your source for the cushions or if you made them? I just started trying to find nice patio cushions, I had no idea they were so expensive! Thank you!
Anne
Also curious about where the cushions and pillows are from?

I really like the lines of your project, they are super slick! Did you buy these cushions somewhere or did you make them yourself? If so, do you have a tutorial here? Thanks.

what is the weight limit for these chairs?
Katie Adams
I'm honestly not sure, but I can say they are very sturdy. Unfortunately I don't have a way to test that though. I apologize.
Camille
How are these holding up now after 3 years?
Willie
Hi Katie,
It’s a beautiful modern design DIY outdoor chair. The materials required to make this chair are also not so many. However, what I want to know is it appears to me that you don’t use any paint on it. Would it look nicer if I apply paint on it?
Michael bosman
Great job dude! I really love this simple style of wood furniture. Thank you for sharing.

The 2x4s specified are for how many chairs? Thanks.
