No only am I super excited to give you a little peek into our bathroom renovations today, but I have a little announcement for you too! I am officially a member of the 2016 Plaid Creators as they celebrate 40 YEARS in this industry! They have been doing this longer than I have been alive! Plaid will be releasing tons of new products that I will be sharing with you throughout the year! I hope you are as excited as I am because some of these new items will rock your world! You can find out more about these new products here.

For this month's challenge we created projects based on these top DIY trends that debuted at CHA 2016 in January. There were so many trends and I had a hard time choosing. This Industrial Farmhouse Bathroom Sign is sort of a blend between the trends Authentic and Curiosity.
I think my husband's biggest pet peeve is when one of the kids don't flush the toilet. And when I say one of the kids I may or may not be guilty of that too (somebody PLEASE put in me time out, lol!). I mean in all fairness generally it's because I can't even go to the restroom without having to jump up and run somewhere, just the other day my youngest fell down the stairs while I tried to take a potty break. SO basically what I'm saying is I have a legit reason (yeah, let's go with that) for occasionally forgetting to flush, the kids however, well... that's on them ;)!
Given our problem it only made sense to make a sign to remind us all how to fix it. : ) I shared my bathroom plans a few weeks ago, where I talked about the style I was going for - Industrial Farmhouse - and how I was planning to achieve this look. This sign was something I thought up just the other day so it wasn't in the original plans, but it filled a gap I had just perfectly!
Are you ready to make one? It's way easier than it looks!
Supplies:
- FolkArt® Home Decor Chalk in the paint colors Sheepskin and Parisian Grey
- FolkArt® Home Decor Wax in the color White Wax
- FolkArt ® Home Decor™ Brushes
- FolkArt ® Home Decor™ Layering Block
- Wooden Plaque
- Metal Letters (I found mine at Hobby Lobby)
- Sanding Block (fine grit)
- Hammer & Nails
How to Make a DIY Industrial Farmhouse Bathroom Sign
Start by painting your wooden plaque in the Sheepskin paint color and let dry.
Then, pour a little bit of the Parisian Grey Paint onto a piece of scrap wood or cardboard and dip your layering block into the paint. Following the directions on the packaging, remove excess paint by blotting it on a clean surface of the cardboard, then run the layering block along the wooden plaque until you achieve your desired look. This gives it a distressed look without all the extra steps! I'm really excited to start incorporating this into my distressing techniques.
Let dry and sand with your sanding block, distressing the edges and softening up the paint. Clean off any sawdust, then apply the wax according to the instructions on the bottle.
Attach the metal letters to the wooden plaque using the hammer and nails, and hang each letter - that's it!
Now you can hang your new industrial farmhouse bathroom sign above your toilet and hopefully everyone will flush when necessary ;)!

Sounds like your kiddos are like my kiddos. I almost dread walking into their bathroom! Cute sign. So far I only have one reader but once the other two are reading two, their bath will have lots of signs like yours! Visiting from Link Party Palooza.

Hi,
I just couldn't resist writing a comment. I don't like Meryl Streep either! My sister feels the same way. I'm usually afraid to say it because so many think she's wonderful.
But I also love your style and would love to be able to create the way you do.
I've been following your site for a long time and not commenting, but your husband's feelings about Meryl needed some support. 🙂

Hi!
What hardware is holding up the shelves? I love it!
Katie
Hi Michelle, it is just metal pipe from the plumbing sections at hardware stores : ) You can buy them in precut lengths, or have them cut custom lengths if you want : )
Kim
Also curious about the hardware the shelves are on. Thanks.

This is adorable! I love your style and your techniques! I can't wait to try and recreate. Where did you find your wooden plaque from? Do you make them?
Jamie Marabillas
Do you have a diy up for the stain on the shelves and mounting? I have been checking for weeks and can't figure out the colors used. I LOVE them!
Sarah
Where are the shelves from?
Derrick
Hi! Love this! What size are your galvanized letters?
Jenna
Love pretty much everything about your bathroom 🙂 I was curious where you found the metal basket? Thanks so much!
Elizabeth Rice
Hi-
What are the dimensions of the plaque and letters. Gonna need to order it all online, but need measurements to ensure the letters will fit on the plaque.. 🙂 (Maybe where you got the plaque, too?
BoB
Dimensions are 15-inch width and 4 inches height.
Sandi
What is holding the shelves? Where did you find the "rough" shelves. Thanks so much!
Cynthia
Where did get the wood Shelvinging and hardwood from?
Meaghan
What size shelves did you use and what size pipes did you use?
Katie
Hi Meaghan. I'm not sure of the sizes of the shelves as we have left that house. I believe I used 2x8's for the shelf, but the length I just kinda measured it out to fill the space between the wall and the mirror. The pipes were 3/4" pipes though : )
Karen
Katie, where did you get the wooden box with the drawers and also the jar that says things.. thanks
Katie
Hi Karen! The little wooden box is from Hobby Lobby... the "Things" jar is actually from Walmart, but I believe they discontinued it 🙁
violet
