DIY gold painted Christmas Ornaments. An easy DIY craft tutorial idea for a gorgeous ornament that will look amazing hanging on your Christmas Tree.
One of my very favorite Christmas traditions is our family Christmas Ornament Exchange. Every year all of the women in my family make a handmade ornament for everyone else. Then I have 8 new handmade ornaments every year that I can cherish and enjoy for years to come.
This year my husband thought I was crazy as he was shopping for supplies with me. He kept saying “I trust you, but really?” Even took a moment to poke a little fun when an employee saw us both with arms full of plastic animals and made a comment.
It’s all good. I knew they would be awesome, and boy was I right! I love these ornaments and if I do say so myself, I am pretty proud of these ornaments.

These plastic animal toys are super cheap. They are only $1.00 a piece and can be found at most department stores or you could even try the dollar store.
You will also need some gold metallic paint. This Rust-oleum American Accents Metallic Bright Gold spray paint worked perfectly.
You will also need a little hardware. I don’t know what they are called, but they are like a small screw with a loop on the end. Twist these into the top of the plastic toy before you paint. Then you will have a loop to hang your new ornament from. I didn’t take a picture of the screw before I painted, but you can get the idea.
I applied 2 coats of the gold paint and look at how gorgeous this elephant is. I never realized all of the detail on these little plastic toys until they were painted. Isn’t it gorgeous?
I picked out some deep red ribbon I had on hand and tied a little bow around that screw loop. Then I used one of the green ornament wires and hooked it through that loop to hang it on the tree.
I absolutely love how they look hanging on the tree and they really aren’t very heavy at all. So they stay right where I put them.
When I was finishing up my ornaments my husband came down into my craft room and laughed and said, “those are pretty awesome. I never doubted you!” Sure, honey.

Aww those are precious. Thanks for posting. Hello from Treasure Box Tuesday.
What a nice idea to have a Christmas ornament swap! It must be so fun to see what everyone creates each year. This idea is super cute and so simple! Thanks for sharing with us at Your Turn to Shine!
These animal ornaments are an awesome idea! They came out great!
Thanks!
This is super cute, and great for the kids. Wish I have seen this post before! Now I’ll have to wait for next Christmas 😉
What a fun way to re-purpose old toys. I’m mentally going thru my kids rooms’ to see what neglected forgotten toys would look good in gold. Of course, as soon as they are spray painted and hung my kiddos would whine how I ruined their “favorite” toy, lol.
Ha ha! Isn’t that how it goes! I love the idea of turning those past favorite toys into ornaments. Great idea! I bought mine new. 🙂
You made the festive ornaments. So adorable !
