Choosing the Right Ceiling Fan for Bedrooms

Choosing the right ceiling fan for bedrooms should balance both function and style. These fans are sure to cross both those items off your list!

I will 100% always have a ceiling fan in our bedrooms. Maybe it's because I was raised in the south and we are addicted to having our air move while we sleep, who knows! But when we were designing our home and it came to lighting, ceiling fans were a requirement. Today I'm going to walk you through choosing the right ceiling fan for bedrooms and the ones we chose for our home. There are a few things to consider, but it's not overwhelming, I promise!

Ceiling Fans in our New Build

Before we get started on all the ways to choose the perfect Hunter Ceiling Fan, these are the ceiling fans we used in our new build. So far we are loving each of them!

Master Bedroom Ceiling Fan - The Melbourne 52" Ceiling Fan with no lights was the perfect addition to our Master Bedroom considering we have plenty of recessed lighting. It's extremely quiet and with a 6-speed, DC reversible motor, all adjustable from the wall control, it's perfect for every season we experience here in Wisconsin!

White Ceiling Fan (Daughter's Room) - My daughter requested a white ceiling fan that didn't stick out and blended in with her decor. I'm not really sure where she got this from, but she's my daughter and she knows what she wants, hah! We chose the Minimus 52" in white for her because it has a nice classic yet streamlined look. Most importantly (for her) it also comes with a remote so she can read in bed at night and adjust the fan if she gets cold!

Black 54" Ceiling Fan - My oldest teenage son requested a fan that would help him not sweat at night (even though we keep our house pretty chilly). For him we went with the Havoc 54" fan that has a wall control. This fan can move some air and I highly suggest it if you're somebody who needs a fan to sleep with!

Black 52" Ceiling Fan - My youngest went with the same Minimus 52" fan as my daughter, except he requested black, which I think is a nice pop in his room with the two-toned walls.

Do You Want a Light?

This is the first thing I consider because it's kind of non-negotiable. You either want a light, or you don't. Most bedrooms will require a light on the fan. However, our master bedroom is one of the spaces we chose to not have one. We have a cathedral ceiling and recessed lights in this space, so it made more sense to have a statement ceiling fan here. In a standard bedroom (like our kids' rooms) we do have lights on the fans because there are no recessed lights. When searching online for ceiling fans, this is one of the easiest filters to use!

What Size Ceiling Fan is Best?

The next thing I consider is size. It's pretty important you choose the right size ceiling fan for your space so let's talk about what size you want where:

30 - 48" Size Fan: These are used in smaller spaces, typically less than 100 sq. ft. Small offices, laundry rooms, etc. This would also work in a 10'x10' bedroom.

48"-54" Size Fan: I would say this is going to be your typical size ceiling fan that will go in almost all bedrooms, or even in some living rooms.

56"+: This is going to be a very large fan and should only be used in spaces that are quite large (400 sq ft+) or it may overpower your room.

We used 52" fans in all of our bedrooms with the exception of my oldest son's bedroom where we went with a 54". His room is a little over 150 sq ft, so not a huge bedroom, however, he is a teenage boy and always complaining of being hot and he has a tendency to sweat at night. He wanted a fan that could move some air! A 54" fan is still in the range for a bedroom, but it's definitely at the top end. I wouldn't go bigger than this for a bedroom. Our room is a little over 200 sq ft with a tall cathedral ceiling and we have a 52" fan and it works great! The Melbourne fan we chose has 6 different speed settings and we've never had to go above the middle range. It keeps the air flowing perfectly for us!

Which Mounting Style Do You Need?

I feel like this is often one of the most overlooked considerations when choosing a ceiling fan. It's very important your fan does not hang down too low in a bedroom for safety reasons! If your bedroom has standard 8' ceilings you will want to go with a low profile or flush mount style ceiling fan. Nobody wants to hit their hands on a blade while straightening out sheets and comforters!

If your ceiling height is 9' or above, you can start looking at fans with downrods (there are different sizes for different ceiling heights). Another important consideration is if your fan is on a sloped ceiling, you need to make sure your fan supports a slopped downrod.

Choosing the Right Style

Once you have determined if you want a light, the correct blade size, and the mounting style it's time to start looking at the overall aesthetic of the ceiling fans! For our home, we went with simple streamlined fans that would blend in with multiple different styles. I hadn't quite designed all our rooms when I picked out fans, but I did know that I wanted them to be timeless and fit with any changes we would make over the years, especially as our kids get older and their styles change. The main thing we focused on was color. And if you know me, it's always neutral 😉

Other Accessories and Considerations

The 4 things above are the main ways I choose ceiling fans, but once you've narrowed it down there are a few other things you can look for. Some fans have remote controls, others have pull cords.
