Today I bring you a few things. First a tutorial on using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, then how I made my pretty new side table. Sounds fun right? Ok, well let’s get to it then! : )
First off, I’d like to say one of the number reasons I love Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is that I finished this table during my daughter’s nap time! That’s how I like to refinish furniture!
How in the world did I finish this table in one nap time you ask? Well.. with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, you don’t have to sand off any old finishes or paint! Yup, that’s what I said NO SANDING! Well.. not until you want to distress it anyways. : ) and it dries SUPER FAST!
Ok so let’s take a look at what you will need
{Supplies}
(what I used)
Annie Sloan Old White
Annie Sloan Antibes Green
Clear Wax
You will also need some fine grit sandpaper
A rag for the wax
Paintbrushes for the paint
That should do it! Now take it all outside and get painting. You can even do it inside because Annie Sloan Paint doesn’t smell!! Which is awesome if you have kids that want to help or observe!
{Let’s get started}
Here is the table I started with. This was a refinish fail from long ago. My MIL gave it to me when my husband and I first got married. I had never redone anything before and well… FAIL! So obviously this needed some help! (see the bubbles on the top) Yeah… I didn’t sand it enough.
First thing was I took my green paint where I knew I wanted to distress the table, edges, corners, places you would expect it to wear naturally, and pained a thin coat.
Then let that dry, doesn’t take long!
I added a coat of the old white next. I like to do 2 thin coats rather than one thick coat, but that’s just me and my weird habits : )
While that’s drying you can think about how wide you want your stripes. To make things easy I just went with the width of my painter’s tape which was 2” So you will find the center of your table and tape off for your stripes
(I got a little paint happy and started before I took the picture, but you get the idea right?)
Then keep painting all the stripes
Peel off the painters tape before it dries! So like immediately : )
Pretty stripes : ) Now let that dry, then you will rub on your wax all over. Before you distress!! Make sure you rub off an excess of the wax, it will feel like you are just wiping away what you did, but you’re not don’t worry! Once the was is dry, start distressing it where ever you want! I rubbed harder in certain places to expose the wood underneath. I also sanded away quite a bit of the green. I didn’t want it super green, more of a subtle color.
I did this all over the table.. on the legs, the feet, everywhere I wanted! That’s what’s so fun about doing it yourself, you get to pick!
I also dry brushed a small amount of the green on the corners (you can see what I’m talking about above)
Finally once you have it looking exactly how you want it, add another layer of the wax, removing all excess. Basically you are buffing it. This is what protects your paint, so do skip this step! And remember, you cannot rub too much off. If you don’t remove the excess it will feel kind of sticky. If that happens, just sand it down and do it again ; )

I love how you transformed that table! Especially all the "chippy" looking paint areas on the legs and near the bottom! I would love to try this paint, and I think the colors I'd most want to try first are Duck Egg Blue, followed by Versailles, and the Coco looks good too. 🙂

I've been wanting to try Annie Sloan paints, and this table just gave me the push I needed! It looks fabulous!!! I'm wanting to give my dresser, vanity, and end tables a facelift since they've been with me since childhood...trust me, we both have been around for many decades! Yeah, we BOTH need one desperately! I want to first try the "Country Grey", or maybe "Duck Egg Blue". I'll probably order a few sample jars to see what my options are, but I haven't seen a project yet, where these paints were used, that didn't look MAHHHVELOUS!

I use chalk paint all the time. I have tried doing stripes but when I do my base coat comes off when I take my tape off. What am I doing wrong??? Help! I love your table, very chic!
Ashley
I've never had that problem before. Make sure you are using painter's tape because it's not very sticky. I also know that chalk paint can take up to 48 hours to fully cure even though it feels dry. Maybe try waiting the full 2 days? Hope that helps!
